Crisfield, in southern Somerset County, Maryland, is located at the mouth of the Little Annemessex River at Tangier Sound. Crisfield's history is based in the seafood industry and the town features many excellent seafood restaurants. Home to the annual National Hard Crab Derby, Crisfield is proud of its ties to the Chesapeake Bay.
Crisfield is home to one of the largest marinas on the East Coast, Somers Cove Marina, with 450 slips. Charter and head boat fishing opportunities are plentiful.
On the waterfront at Somers Cove Marina, you can visit the Crisfield Historical Museum and Visitor's Center. The museum has a nice collection of artifacts and old photos from Crisfield's past, as well as a nice decoy collection. It is definitely worth a stop during a visit to Crisfield. There is also a nice little crab shack set up behind the museum. The Port of Crisfield Escorted Walking Tour begins at the museum and includes a visit to a crab and oyster processing plant where you can see skilled workers pick crabs and shuck oysters with lightening speed.
Crisfield's waterfront has undergone some recent changes. Waterfront condominiums have been constructed on the far western side of town, near the dock. Some road improvements to the main street coming into town have also been made. Despite these, changes, Crisfield still looks like a working waterfront town. Seafood industries still line much of the waterfront. There are also some empty buildings, testament that the seafood industry isn't as good to Crisfield as it once was.
This town comes alive when they are hosting one of their many events at Somers Cove Marina. In addition to the annual Hard Crab Derby, Crisfield hosts many other annual festivals. These annual events feature local seafood and are a great opportunity to visit this authentic Chesapeake Bay waterfront town. Popular festivals include the Soft Shell Spring Fair, the J. Millard Tawes Crab and Clam Bake, and the Terrapin Sands Fish Fry. Visit the Crisfield Chamber of Commerce website for event information.
