Irvington, Virginia
Visiting Irvington
Irvington is about an hour and a half drive from either Richmond or Williamsburg, Virginia. The town is located on Virginia’s Northern Neck and sits on the shores of Carter’s Creek, a tributary to the Rappahannock River.
Irvington once thrived as a steamboat town during the 1890s and early 1900s, when steamboats brought goods and travelers to the town. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed much of the town in 1917, and the end of the steamboat era left Irvington a shadow of its former self.
However, as is the case with many Chesapeake Bay waterfront towns, Irvington has experienced a comeback. The Tides Inn and Resort was opened in 1947, bringing many visitors to the town. The town has continued to steadily rebuild itself and now features a variety of lodging, shops, restaurants, and other attractions. With first-class lodging, historic sites, a winery, and a farmers market to visit, there’s plenty to keep visitors occupied.
